ripsawridgeI'm thinking about the Death Tarot trump card, and meditating on the idea of it with the seed thought that wishes to "just get away," or to finally begin that simple life that you dream of are a "death wish." I also have the idea that this isn't a bad thing. Sleep is a form of death. And death makes it possible to understand life.
I'm struck by the awareness that our culture is very much trying to put itself down for a long, long nap. It's camouflaged it's intentions by describing the necessary work as a technological imperative:
* All the books to be digitized, so dusty paper copies can be removed!
* Your photos...get them in one place, for once and for all!
* Music, the same.
* Etc.
Frankly, we must be tired. Our cultural project must be ending, perhaps because we exhausted it's possibilities already decades ago. The retreat from a materialist culture (I'm using the term in some ideal "best" sense, that is, someone who appreciates and enjoys the use of materials) is in fact the desire for sleep/death.
My interest in old typewriters, and then the luxury of artisanal paper is a private rebellion....
